Rooppur Power Plant Seminar

Will Rooppur's power put the national grid at risk?  [ According to the news paper ]

The current national grid does not have the capacity to transmit power to the Rooppur nuclear power plant. The national grid is at risk due to rented power plants and 40-year-old government plants. In the meantime, if the power supply to the Rooppur nuclear power plant in Pabna starts, the grid may collapse.

A lot of money is needed to modernize the national grid. Adding these funds will again increase the cost of Rooppur center. By investing so much money, the government should move away from implementing debt-ridden nuclear power plant projects.
These were the words of the speakers at a seminar titled 'Power Development of Bangladesh' organized by 'Nagorik Oikka' at the National Press Club in the capital on Tuesday afternoon.

The keynote speaker at the seminar was Saifur Rahman, a professor at the University of Virginia in the United States, who said that Russia wanted to buy spent fuel, but it needed to be clear how many years it would take. Japan sends spent fuel from its centers to France. Special ships of the French navy come to provide security for the spent fuel. Japan also has to pay the cost of the French navy. Now whether the Russian navy will come to provide security to us when we take the fuel from Rooppur to Russia. On the one hand the cost is increasing and on the other hand Bangladesh is becoming a part of geopolitics. He also said that national security would be threatened.

Hasib Chowdhury, a teacher at the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, said the wave of electricity generated in rental power plants in the country is not the same as the wave that flows in the national grid. Of this, if 2400 MW of electricity comes from a single center and somehow a disaster occurs somewhere, then we do not have the capacity to handle that disaster. In that case the whole power transmission line will fall into disaster.

Hasib Chowdhury further said, ‘Rooppur is a very densely populated area. In the event of an accident at a nuclear power plant, radioactivity will spread. At least 3 million people will have to be evacuated from there. This is by no means possible in Bangladesh. The government is organizing a massacre in Rooppur. '

Energy expert BD Rahmatullah said energy was the main sector to please foreign powers. Those who deliberately want to destroy Bangladesh are helping to build nuclear power plants.

BD Rahmatullah said there is solar power as an alternative to nuclear power plants, electricity can be generated using river currents, there is a lot of potential for wind power. The production cost at a gas-fired power plant is about two and a half rupees and at oil-fired power plants a maximum of four and a half rupees. The average cost of power generation should not be more than three and a half rupees. However, the price of electricity is being increased from time to time. Mahmudur Rahman Manna, convener of Citizens Unity, Saleh Uddin Ahmed, former governor of Bangladesh Bank, journalist Shubh Kibria and others also spoke at the seminar.
